New Priorities, HUGE Winter Sale, Get to Know Us, and a Good Winter Read

Dear friend,

With the holidays behind us and a new year just waiting to be written, I’m content with knowing it’s in the planning that creates the dreams of our future. I must admit that we’re all scrambling a bit to get our priorities lined up and an agreement from all those whose time and effort will be required of them.

So far, we have come up with a decent list that includes planning and planting our greenhouse that the chickens have used over the past year, maintaining our herb garden and designing it to produce the herbs we need for our backyard potions, and creating a couple of new tallow skincare items that we are super excited about.

The list is growing day by day, and that old wintertime excitement over implementing new projects and ideas is becoming all-consuming, if we let it. Patience is required here for serious business. And it certainly is that!

Have you ever wondered where we get our suet from? Or, what makes Possum Fox tallow different from other tallow creams? Get to know us better in my frequently asked questions article. As they say, knowledge is power, and I would also add ‘the ability to choose wisely in nourishing our skin.

"It's literally food. High-quality, nutrient-dense food that happens to be skincare gold."

Get to know us!

1. Where do you get your tallow?
We purchase suet from small, Oregon based ranches that practice sustainable farming. Beef suet is the hard, nutrient-rich (vitamins A, D, E, & K) fat found around a cow’s kidneys and loins. It’s prized for its purity and high melting point, making it ideal for tallow - a traditional, deeply nourishing ingredient used in natural skincare. We only work with ranches that keep their cows on a grass diet and avoid giving their cows hormones or unnecessary vaccines.

2. Why is tallow so good for our skin?
Beef tallow is incredibly nourishing for our skin because its molecular structure is almost identical to human sebum, allowing it to absorb easily and support the skin’s natural barrier. Rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, it delivers deep, lasting hydration without clogging pores. Tallow also acts as an excellent carrier for healthy plant-based oils, helping them penetrate more effectively and enhancing their benefits for soft, balanced, truly nourished skin.

3. What makes your tallow different from other tallow creams?
Possum Fox tallow creams stand apart because we see tallow not as the sole ingredient, but as a powerful base. We craft unique blends that combine nutrient-rich tallow with carefully selected plant oils known to nourish and heal the skin. Tallow’s ability to absorb deeply allows it to act as a transporter, carrying these plant oils beneath the surface where they can truly work, instead of letting them sit on top like many other creams.

4. How do you render your tallow?
We use a combination of wet and dry rendering methods to produce the purest, highest-quality tallow while preserving its natural nutrients. While wet rendering can lead to some nutrient loss, it allows us to create tallow creams that are completely free from the characteristic beefy smell often associated with traditional tallow.

5. Does tallow have a smell?
While it’s common for tallow to have a faint scent, we take extra care in rendering ours. Our tallow undergoes a meticulous 6-step rendering process to ensure it is as pure as possible. This process helps minimize any strong odors, and we are committed to keeping the scent clean and neutral, so you can enjoy the benefits without any overpowering smells.

6. Is tallow temperature sensitive?
Yes, tallow is sensitive to temperature. For optimal storage, we recommend keeping it at room temperature. If you live in a warmer environment, you may want to store it in a cool, dry place to prevent it from becoming too soft or melting.

7. Where do you source your ingredients?
We source most of our ingredients locally in Oregon and strive to partner with other small businesses, supporting our community while growing together. We believe in nurturing connections and giving back to the place we call home!

8. Why do you use castor oil?
We include castor oil in our products because it offers incredible benefits for the skin. Castor oil is known for its deeply moisturizing properties, making it perfect for dry or sensitive skin. It helps to lock in moisture, promote skin elasticity, and has natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. It's also rich in fatty acids, which can support healthy skin cell turnover, leaving your skin feeling soft and nourished.

Nourish your skin day and night…

Introducing “Brother” Sage and “Sister” Moon, our complimentary daily skincare moisturizers. We can honestly say, as the Italians do, that the two “marry well" together.

What does this mean?

When Italians say one ingredient or product "marries" (or "marries well") with another, they mean that the flavors and textures combine in perfect harmony, creating a balanced, harmonious, and delicious union.

This phrase, often stemming from the Italian word "sposa" (meaning "spouse"), is not just about pairing, but about a deep, complementary, or traditional integration of ingredients, much like a successful marriage.

Sage Day Cream contains organic myrrh-infused rosehip oil, creating a powerful blend known for its regenerative properties. This oil helps to promote skin repair, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and improve overall skin tone and texture.

Moon Day Cream contains organic Frankincense-infused extra-virgin olive oil, an antioxidant-rich oil that helps rejuvenate and protect the skin, promoting firmness and radiance while supporting skin elasticity.

Whether you’re seeking a dynamic duo of daily skincare that you can depend on to deliver the results you want, or you are still in the discovery stage of using organic grass-fed tallow skincare, we encourage you to ensure your ingredients work well to integrate and support each other. Nourishment on every level is essential in healthy, satisfying, and results-producing skincare.

My winter book review…

Once Upon a Wardrobe

I especially love reading stories that move my heart and soul, bringing tears to my eyes. But for me, they must always end with hope, warmth, and beauty.

This book by Patti Callahan is definitely one of them.

Once Upon a Wardrobe is a historical fiction about Megs, a college student at Oxford, who fulfills her little brother’s dying wish to find out if Narnia is real. His question leads Megs on a journey of discovery by asking C.S. Lewis himself. During their conversations, she learns the real-life stories and experiences that inspired the beloved Chronicles of Narnia book series, offering a wealth of depth and insight. If you are familiar with the Narnia books by C.S. Lewis, you will find this one just as enjoyable.

“The brave boy’s story was short but full of just as much courage as any knight in shining armor fighting a dragon…He understood now, after all the tales and adventures, that “There is a light, a bright lamppost light where all stories begin and end…..the hints had always been right in front of his eyes and inside his heart. The stories that thrilled him were echoes of the world that waited for him.” (Excerpt from the book)

May your week be filled with dreaming and planning, always accompanied by a warm and frangrant cup of tea!

Cheers,

Susan and the Possum Fox family
